Scheveningen: seaside resort and varied driving area

Scheveningen is The Hague's best-known seaside resort, attracting visitors all year round. The neighbourhood combines a vibrant coastal strip with the quiet Scheveningen Village and modern apartment complexes. That contrast is directly reflected in the traffic: on the boulevard during peak season long queues of cars form, while just a few hundred metres away in the Village the streets are narrow and quiet.

For learner drivers Scheveningen offers special value. You practise coastal road driving with varying speeds, tram crossings on the Nieuwe Parklaan and Prins Mauritslaan, parking pressure in the resort, and the transition to city roads towards The Hague city centre. This mix quickly makes you a well-rounded driver.

Traffic in Scheveningen

The Scheveningen boulevard (Gevers Deynootweg) is the main axis of the resort. In summer and on sunny days queues form regularly. The road has multiple lanes combined with cyclists, pedestrians and trams — an intensive learning environment that quickly builds learner confidence.

The Nieuwe Parklaan is the connecting road between Scheveningen and The Hague city centre. Several tram lines cross this road. Tram rails are slippery in wet weather and trams can stop unexpectedly at stops. This is a classic Scheveningen challenge that Rijschool Denhaag practises systematically.

The Scheveningen Village has narrow streets with cyclists and pedestrians from all directions. Here you build skills for passing oncoming traffic, exits with limited visibility and smooth acceleration in busy environments.

Parking in Scheveningen

Parking in Scheveningen is seasonal. In peak season (April–September) parking spaces along the boulevard are scarce and relatively expensive. The municipality has several car parks and multi-storey garages near the harbour and Kurhaus. In the Village residents-only parking applies in most streets.

For learner drivers the pick-up point is preferably a quiet residential street in the Village or a side street off the boulevard. Rijschool Denhaag knows the parking environment and starts lessons at a practical location.

Accessibility for People with Disabilities

Scheveningen has disabled parking spaces near the boulevard, Kurhaus and harbour. Most beach crossings have been adapted with paved paths. Candidates wishing to drive with an adapted vehicle can discuss this with their instructor.

Beach Season and Traffic Pressure

Scheveningen is busiest on fine days in spring and summer, and during events on the beach. Rijschool Denhaag adapts the lesson route: during extreme congestion we first practise in the quieter Village or drive via the Nieuwe Parklaan to The Hague and back. Gevaarlijke punten voor beginners

  • Tram Crossings on the Nieuwe Parklaan Nieuwe Parklaan, Scheveningen / The Hague border

Several tram lines cross the Nieuwe Parklaan on the way from the city centre to Scheveningen. Tram rails are slippery in wet weather and trams stop unexpectedly at stops. Beginners must learn to recognise the rails in good time.

  • Boulevard during Peak Season Gevers Deynootweg, Scheveningen

In summer the Gevers Deynootweg is packed with cyclists, mopeds, pedestrians and cars side by side. Lanes change occupancy and merging requires extra attention.

  • Cyclists and Pedestrians in the Village Scheveningen Village

The Scheveningen Village has narrow streets without a separate cycle path. Cyclists and pedestrians are everywhere; exits have limited visibility.

  • Harbour Area — Lorries and Large Vehicles Scheveningen Harbour

Around Scheveningen harbour heavy goods vehicles associated with the fishing fleet are common. Large vehicles make wide turns; beginners are caught out by the space required.

  • Prins Mauritslaan — Tram Line Crossing Prins Mauritslaan, Scheveningen

On the Prins Mauritslaan the road crosses the tram track. The combination of cyclists from the Westbroekpark and tram traffic makes this a complex spot for beginners.
